Vegas Pub Crawler: Featured Beer of Week (With a Twist)

When you want to spice up your recipes or want a refreshing beverage to enjoy while watching a sporting event, beer is an excellent go-to. Typically, the only way to enjoy a well-crafted brew is in liquid form, but this startup company has figured out a different way for you to enjoy your beer. In 2012, Dan Kurzrock and Jordan Schwartz, founders of ReGrained, came up with a way for customers to eat beer through granola bars.

No joke. Granola bars made with beer.

Vegas Pub Crawler’s Featured Beer of the Week: ReGrained

As many great stories have started, this business traces its roots back to a fraternity house. While studying at UCLA, Dan Kurzrock would brew up beer in the fraternity kitchen. Realizing a number of leftover products and materials from each batch, he and longtime buddy Jordan Schwartz came up with the idea to make and sell bread from the spent grains. This took off and the increased demand caused them to rethink a way to make their products more efficient.

The result? Granola bars.

Grains are packed with fibers and proteins, and even after going through the brewing process, they still retain their nutrient factors. Because of the rich nutrients and protein, this makes for a great base for granola bars. Remaining grains used to brew beer also retain a vast amount of the flavors from the batch.

ReGrained is a company with a positive purpose. They tackle food waste by repurposing the spent grains of breweries and create a nutritious and delicious product. Local breweries supply all of the grains with one supplier, 21st Amendment, generating over 5,000 pounds of grain. Most of the excess grain from 21st Amendment goes to a farmer in the Central Valley, but a portion goes to ReGrained for their granola bars.

Currently, ReGrained has two styles of granola bars on the market: Honey Almond IPA and Chocolate Coffee Stout bar. As the company continues to grow, it will be exciting to see what other flavor combinations they can come up with.
